In the framework of the “Care for the Elderly IV” programme, a very timely talk was held to raise awareness of critical issues concerning public health and the environment. The speech focused on particulate matter, the “invisible killers”, as the guest speaker Mr. Simeon Sahinidis, Radioelectronics Physicist, Secondary Education Teacher, specializing in Nuclear Physics and Waste Management, described them.Based on many years of teaching and research experience, Mr. Sahinidis presented a scientifically documented presentation on the effects of air pollution on human health, focusing on the link between environmental pollution and cardio-respiratory diseases and sudden deaths. The presentation highlighted the dimensions of the problem, providing useful insights and practical guidelines for the protection of health and the environment. The speech was accompanied by Father Ambrosios, Doctor of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and collaborator of Mr.Sachinidis, who gave the theme a spiritual and moral dimension, stressing that the protection of the environment is an act of responsibility and faith. The audience watched with undiminished interest, while at the end of the presentation there was a dialogue with questions and queries. Those present expressed questions about ways of prevention, both to reduce their personal environmental footprint and to protect their health. This action is part of the wider “Care for the Elderly IV” programme, which aims to support, activate and empower beneficiaries, offering them not only material assistance but also intellectual stimulation, learning opportunities and social interaction.
