SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETED CLOSING CEREMONY OF “THE MOBILE SCHOOL TRAVELS” PROJECT

With a modest ceremony that suited the heavy atmosphere of yesterday, due to the untimely death of the great benefactor of the city of Drama, Kostas Apostolidis, and the completion of one year since the tragic Tempi train crash with 57 dead people, the Ladies Union of Drama – House of Open Hospitality held the Closing Ceremony of the 4-year project “The Mobile School Travels”.

The ceremony that took place on Wednesday, February 28, in the auditorium of the Municipal Conservatory of Drama began with the observance of a minute’s silence, immediately followed by greetings. President, Aliki Tsiamoura, emphasized that the success of the project is due to the excellent project team, while she praised the outstanding cooperation that the organization had with both the Bodosaki Foundation and the Norwegian Embassy in Greece. She also pledged that although the funding ends forthcoming April, the Ladies Union will continue the interventions in the Roma camps of Drama.

Afterwards, took the floor the Norwegian Ambassador to Greece, Lajla Brandt Jakhelln, who congratulated the Ladies Union on the successful outcome of the project and thanked the Bodosaki Foundation and the Solidarity Now for their contribution as administrators of the Active Citizens Fund program grant for Greece. The Ambassador also referred to the new programming agreement between the donor countries of the European Economic Area (EEA) and the EU, according to which Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein will allocate 3.2 billion euros to 15 EU countries, including Greece. Norway provides around 97% of this funding. Her speech was followed by the greeting of the President of the Bodosaki Foundation, Athina Desypri, who, among other things, referred to the professionalism achieved by the Ladies Union in all the programs it implements and the positive results that the “Mobile School Travels” had for Roma children. The Programme Officer of the Active citizens fund for Greece, Katerina Goula, made a brief reference to the financing of the EEA, to the programs that ran and to their results. The Manager of the Belgian Organization Rob Sweldens sent his own online greeting, followed by the presentation of audio-visual material that captured all the work done in the four years of operation of the “Mobile School Travels” project. The baton was taken by the choir of the 6th primary school of Drama, led by Angelos Kalotrapezis, who gave a pleasant surprise to the Ambassador by singing traditional children’s songs in the Norwegian language.

The ceremony ended with a light lunch where the dignitaries had the opportunity to chat with the attendees. The event was honored with the presence of the representatives of the Holy Metropolis of Drama, as also of the representatives of the Local Government A and B grade.

After three years of interventions only within Drama, the Mobile School from 2020 until today is taking place three times a week in areas of Drama, Kavala and Xanthi, in order to approach Roma children who either for social or family reasons are excluded from the school communities and cannot have a regular education. The project received a new nine-month extension until April 2024 starting in August 2023. One of the goals is to convince more Roma children in the Philippou camp to go to school and continue their education. For this reason, the project team carries out a “Social Tutoring” in the settlement of Philippou three times a week, helping the children to meet the demands of school lessons.

The project “The Mobile School Travels” is implemented within the framework of the Active citizensfund program, with the implementing body of the Ladies’ Union of Drama – House of Open Hospitality (ΗΟΗ). The Active citizens fund program, amounting to €15 million, is financed by Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway and is part of the financial mechanism of the European Economic Area (EEA) for the period 2014 – 2021, known as EEA Grants. The program aims to strengthen and optimize the sustainability of civil society, as well to highlight its role in promoting democratic processes, strengthening citizens’ participation in society and defending human rights. The management of the grant of the Active citizens fund program for Greece has been undertaken jointly by the Bodosaki Foundation and the Solidarity Now.
