The Ladies' Union of Drama-H.O.H. celebrates Saint Barbara, the patron saint of the island, with boats and the traditional dessert.
On Tuesday, December 3, immediately after the procession of the icon, members, friends and volunteers will offer the traditional sweet "varvara" to the whole world. Also with great enthusiasm and love the "boats of wishes" were made by the creative activity department of the elderly, volunteers and beneficiaries of the organization. The construction of these boats takes place in the context of the celebrations of the patron saint of Drama and patron saint of the artillery, St. Barbara. The boats will be made available by the president Aliki Tsiamoura on Monday 2 December to children of beneficiary families, so that they can participate in the custom of our city.
The custom is accompanied by a story. According to this story, on the site of the present lake there was the church of St. Barbara, which was demolished by the Turks in order to build a mosque. When they attempted to build the mosque on the foundations of the old church, on the day of the feast of St. Barbara, water began to gush from the area, covering the foundations of the church. This spot is now the small lake that we attribute the boats to in honor of our patron saint.
